Nina Simon, a paramedic and EMS instructor at Universal Ambulance has been named the 2024 EMS Practitioner of the Year by the Michigan Association of Emergency Medical Technicians (MAEMT) for her extraordinary contributions to patient care.
“Nina exemplifies exactly what we think of when we think of an EMS hero that we all want serving our communities,” Duncan Walker, president of Universal Ambulance, said in a news release. “She goes above and beyond every single day and her commitment to both her patients and the education of future paramedics and EMTs is truly remarkable. We are honored to have her as a member of our team.”
Simon, who lives in Warren, began her EMS career in 2011 as an EMT and earned her paramedic license in 2013.
Seven years later she earned her instructor coordinator license to become a certified community paramedic and most recently gained certification as an emergency medical dispatch instructor. Her newest role enables her to train and certify 911 dispatchers— which is a vital need in emergency response. Since becoming an instructor, Simon has taught over 125 EMT-Basic and MFR/EMR students, inspiring and guiding the next generation of EMS professionals.
Although based out of Universal Ambulance’s Macomb County headquarters, Simon works across Oakland, Wayne and Macomb counties, providing her expertise to a broad range of communities.
“Nina’s expertise, empathy for her patients and drive for excellence are exactly what working in EMS is all about,” said Angela Madden, MAEMT executive director.
Simon’s peers describe her as a compassionate, hardworking leader who consistently prioritizes the well-being of her patients and students. In her role as education coordinator, she consistently goes above and beyond to enhance emergency services and support her team.
“She is an invaluable asset to EMS and we are proud to name her the 2024 Michigan EMS Practitioner of the Year,” said Walker.
